Christmas 2012
God meets and sustains us in life’s darkest moments when all false gods have fled.
This is why Christians wear medallions representing crosses rather than medallions representing the Nativity or the wedding at Cana.
It’s not that God is absent from happy occasions such as births, weddings, graduations, promotions, new homes or whatever.
It’s that on those happy occasions God’s voice can easily be drowned out by the many gods misrepresenting these gifts as means of defeating, bargaining with or self-distracting oneself from the power of Death.
But when we encounter severe suffering, grave illness, senseless evil, and our own death or the deaths of those other people and dreams and causes whom we hold dear the other gods, seeing we can no longer serve them, abandon us to our fate.
The voice of God in Christ is the voice that remains when all other voices fall silent.
